A lot of new vapers can get confused as to what an e-liquid contains, so here is a quick guide explaining what PG and VG are, and what they do.

Firstly, the similarities. PG and VG are both odourless liquids that produce vapour when heated. They are both non-toxic and are found in many household and beauty products, like toothpaste.

Now for the differences:


PG is short for Propylene Glycol. This is the flavour carrier and source of the throat hits in e-liquids. If you want stronger flavours and throat hits, we recommend going for a higher level of PG in your e-juice.

PG isn’t a dangerous chemical to the human body, and is found in everyday items like:

  • Asthma inhalers.

  • Beauty products like shampoo and baby wipes.

  • Coffee-based drinks.

  • Ice cream.

  • Fizzy drinks.


VG is short for Vegetable Glycerin. This is the ingredient that controls the level of vapour you’ll get from your e-juice. In addition to this, fluids with higher VG levels are smoother, meaning they are much more suitable for sub-ohm vaping.

Cloud chasers will usually choose a liquid with the maximum VG levels possible, as this will result in the biggest clouds.

VG is also used in many household items, such as:

  • Sweetener - as a sugar replacement.

  • Beauty products like make-up, aftershave and deodorant.

  • Regular food, such as baked goods.

  • Toothpaste.

How safe is PG/VG?

Both substances are non-toxic and are safe for human consumption. However, the most common side effects of vaping e-liquids containing PG or VG are a dry mouth, sore throat, or increased thirst. These symptoms only last for a short while, as the body adjusts to vaping.
